Colerain Just Can't Find the Back of the Net, Fall to Middies 1-0

Contributed by Mike Hoffman

September 29, 2009

Colerain hosted the Middletown Middies tonight. Due to a week of rain, the field condition tonight was wet and very soft.

JV

This match was all Cardinals. Colerain got an early lead on a through ball from John Weisman to Jamie Gobeille scoring the Card's first goal 5 minutes into the match. Colerain was relentless with the pressure. Joe Flohr working the ball down to the on yard line, just outside the Middletown goal, made a perfect pass backward to a trailing John Armbruster who buried the ball in the net, giving Colerain a 2-0 lead. Colerain would score one more time in this half. Flohr again to Armbruster who shot it across the middle, Jamie Gobeille, being in the right place, was there to deflect it into the net. Card's up 3-0. Just before the end of the half, Middletown took a shot from outside Colerain's 20 yard line, putting the ball in the top corner of Colerain's net. The half ended 3-1 Colerain. The second half would continue to be all Card's. After a Cardinal throw in from about half field, Colerain worked the ball down the middle, getting a nice pass of to Jeff Gobeille, who was charging in from the left flank, scoring Colerain's fourth goal of the night. But it didn't end there. With about 15 minutes remaining in the game, Joe Flohr took a hard shot which bounced off Middletown's goalie, Joe Taphorn trailing the play scored the goal. The game ended Colerain winning 5-1.

Varsity

Although the score does not reflect it, this game was all Colerain. The Card's clearly dominated the Middies in this match, playing on Middletown's half of the field 98% of the game. Colerain had numerous opportunities to score but could not get the ball in the net. Middletown was able to score one goal in the first half using their speed to get behind Colerain's defense. In second half Colerain would take shot after shot. The shot's resulted in goal kicks which Colerain would bring right back down the field or goalie punts which again, they would bring right back down the field. Middletown did a good job of clogging up the middle of their goal box disallowing any clear shots for the Cardinals. The game ended in a 1-0 loss.

Cards Win Back to Back, Blank the Knights 2-0

Contributed by Mike Hoffman

September 26, 2009

Colerain played the Northwest Knights tonight. Due to field conditions the game that was supposed to be play at Northwest High School was moved to Colerain's Football stadium.

JV

Colerain started the game off strong, taking control of the field from the first whistle and never giving it up. Just two minutes into the game Eric Moormann scored Colerain's first goal Eric received a ball that Northwest was trying to clear out out their goal box, taking a nice shot from the 18 yard line, placing the ball in the top corner of the net. Colerain continued to control the field by making nice passes, giving themselves multiple opportunities to score. The first half ended with the Cards up by 1. The Cardinals continued to dominate the field in the second half, keeping the field spread and making nice runs. With 23 minutes remaining, Jamie Gobeille scored on a run through the of the Knights goal box, placing the ball in the side of the net. With 16 minutes remaining in the game Austin Wessels did the same thing, scoring the Card's third goal. The Cardinals defense did a tremendous job keeping the ball pushed forward and not letting the Knights play on Colerain's side of the field. Colerain, overall, did an excellent job of controlling the field, making nice passes, communicating, and playing hard. The Cardinals won 3-0.

Varsity

With a goal of back to back wins, Colerain comae out fired up tonight. The Card's started the first half moving the ball north and south enabling them to change the field of play and create opportunities. With 10 minutes left in the half, Senior Mike Davidson found an opening, charging in from the left flank, scoring Colerain's first goal. The half ended with the Cardinal's up 1-0. The second half was played mostly between the 30 yard lines. Colerain stuck to moving the ball north and south, changing the field and patiently looking for opportunities to penetrate. With 12 minutes left in the game Colerain was awarded a free kick at about the Knight's 25 yard line. The Cardinals set up a nice play with Chris McAfee taking control of the middle, receiving the ball, and scoring Colerain's second goal. Colerain finished the game winning 2-0, giving Colerain's goalie Mitch Revetta back to back shut outs.

The Cards next host Middletown on Tuesday September 29, at Colerain.

#11 Walker Scores the Game Winner, Colerain beats Princeton 1-0

Contributed by Mike Hoffman

September 22, 2009

JV

The Cards struggled, allowing the Vikings to control the game. The Vikings scored 15 minutes into the game, making a run down Colerain's left side, getting past three players to score the game's first goal. With 15 minutes left in the half, Princeton off of a throw in, was able to get around a Colerain defender 30 yards out with no defense support, then capitalized on a one on one opportunity with the goalie. This gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead at half. Colerain continued to struggle most of the second half. With 15 minutes left in the game the Cardinals started to play much better. Colerain's defense worked diligently, keeping the ball pushed forward and making nice runs. The Cards, however, were just not able to get the ball in the net. The game ended with Colerain losing 2-0

Varsity

It seemed as if Colerain had two teams tonight. The first half was dominated by the Vikings, controlling the ball and playing at Colerain's end of the field for most of the half. Colerain tried to generate some offense but the Vikings defense was there to shut them down and push the ball back at Colerain. As much as the Vikings played on Colerain's side of the field, the Cards did a good job of not letting Princeton score. The half ended 0-0. Coach Berry must have given them one heck of a a talk at half time because the Cardinals came out playing like a totally different team. Colerain dominated the second half of the game, keeping the ball on the Viking's half of the pitch and playing like a team on a mission. Colerain passed the ball extremely well, passing playable balls to teammates and following with energetic runs. The Cards kept their heads up and were able to find the open player on the opposite side of the field, which created multiple opportunities. With 28 minutes to play, #11 Kevin Walker dribbled the ball through two defenders to create a one on one situation with the Vikings keeper. Coming in from the left side of the field, Kevin stayed patient, waiting for the goalie to make a move, and then shot the ball in the ball in the opposite corner of the net, giving the Cards a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals sustained the "controlled" play and end the game winning 1-0.

BREAKING NEWS: Hamilton QB Townsend OUT against Cardinals

By Chris Himonidis
WeAreColerain.com

Thanks to our friends at the Enquirer, it was RELEASED TODAY that Hamilton starting QB Drew Townsend is OUT OF ACTION for tomorrow night's contest against our Cardinals.

Replacing him, according to WeAreColerain.com sources, will be Jr. WR Brian Cleckley (#9). This should be an interesting twist on the defensive game plan for Coach Cutwright as Cleckley was a dual threat RB/WR so he may be a bit better running the ball than his predecessor, Mr. Townsend.

Keeping you as up-to-date as possible with breaking news as it relates to our Colerain Cardinals!

See you in Hamilton tomorrow night.

COLERAIN CARDINALS (2–2, 1-0 in GMC)
Last Game – Beat Lakota East, 48-24

QB - #8 Greg Tabar (Sr.-CAPT) – Mr. Tabar is tearing it up. 329 yds rushing and 4 TD’s in last two games
RB - #1 Tyler “Uno” Williams (Jr.) – WOW! Welcome back Mr. UNO! 219 yds RUSH, 1 TD, 63-yd punt return for a TD…all last week. Rasied YTD rushing avg. from 5.3 to 9.9

RB - #22 Chris Davis (Fr.) – 7-65 yds in 2nd varsity game, pitched in a 19 yd kickoff return as well
DL - #50 Jake Blust (So.) – continues to be a strong contributor on defense
LB - #5 Tyon Dixon (Sr.) – verbal to Louisville, aggressive & emotional leader on the field
LB - #44 Jarrett Grace (Jr.) – @ 6’4”, 210 lbs, already offered by UC after limited action his Sophomore year
LB - #25 Joe Bolden (So.) – quietly leading the team in fumble recoveries and is really making a name for himself on defense

Only missed XP was on a bad snap, never got kick off. Cardinals may have found their kicker.

Keys to Victory for Colerain
3RD DOWN DEFENSE– This cannot be stressed enough. The Cardinals are not getting off the field defensively on 3rd down. They are allowing opponents to convert on 3rd down a remarkably high 37% of the time. That may not seem high, but consider this:
- It’s the 3rd worst % allowed in the GMC, only Lakota West (37.3%) and Mason (39.6%) are higher
- It’s the highest % allowed by any Colerain team since before 2004. Over the past 5 years (04-08), that avg. has been 21%
The Cardinals must improve in this area defensively. Last week in the 1st quarter against Lakota East, the Cardinals allowed two 3rd and long conversions on the same drive allowing the Thunderhawks to march 80 yards for a TD. That’s NOT Colerain football as we’ve come to expect it. It will be interesting to see if this defense can turn up the intensity on 3rd downs and prevent the long, time-consuming drives by the opposing team.
PRESSURE THE QB – Hamilton QB Drew Townsend is a very talented football player. He was third in the GMC in passing last year behind two guys named Watkins and Ware, not too shabby, huh? He has matured as a QB and has improved his completion percentage over last year. He has already thrown for 6 TD’s this year against only 1 INT. In 10 games last season, he threw 9 TD’s to 7 INT’s. That being said, the Cardinals must apply pressure to Mr. Townsend because he simply cannot move well in, or outside, the pocket. In 2008, he “rushed” (i.e. “ran for his life!”) 81 times for (-81) yards…yes, that’s NEGATIVE yardage. This year, it’s more the same. 20 rushes for (-56) yards. If the Cards Defense can pressure Townsend and either force him to scramble or make poor passing decisions, it can create short fields and possibly some turnovers which would make Defensive Coordinator Shawn Cutright very happy as that is an area of emphasis in his mind (see Lakota East pre-game video preview).
PENALTIES! PENALTIES! PENALTIES! – It’s starting to get ridiculous. 10 penalties for 89 yards last week against Lakota East. Now I realize that some of those came late in the game and were mostly of the 5 yard false start and illegal motion type penalties due to waves of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th teamers making their way into the game, but that’s no excuse. Forget the impact of the yards, think about what offensive penalties do to the rhythm of your offense. The Triple Option is a rhythm offense. Once you get in that groove and you’ve got the defense back on their heels…look out! But if you are constantly stopping for penalties, it destroys your momentum AND moves you backwards on the field. It might not have nearly as much of an impact against the softer part of the schedule, but every week is a playoff week for this team and championship behaviors must be learned now, not week 9, 10, or 11.

Bottom-Line
Hamilton came into this season with high hopes as they improved to 6-4 last season. May not seem like much, but that was the first winning season for Big Blue since their last playoff team went 7-3 in 2001. Head Coach Jim Place has revitalized Big Blue and has them believing they can compete with anyone. A tough OT loss in week 1 and a big loss last week to GMC rival Lakota West has Hamilton looking to gain confidence and keep the hopes alive of a second consecutive winning season. Unfortunately for Big Blue, the Cardinals are not going to help in that endeavor. What was a very good defense last season (allowing only 175 yards/game) has sputtered to find that same success in ’09 (allowing 284 yards/game). While only allowing opponents 116 rush yds/game this year, expect for Colerain to double that output easily. If the Cardinals can step up the defensive effort on 3rd downs, Hamilton should have trouble moving the ball. However, don't expect a shutout as the Big Blue are too talented for that to be the case and when opponents have scored on Colerain, they are averaging 20 points/contest. Look for a high scoring affair with the Cards putting it away late in the third quarter.

GO CARDINALS!

Cross Country Goes National!

By Brendan McDonough
For WeAreColerain.com

This week, the cross country teams traveled up to East Lansing, Michigan for the Michigan State Nike Playmakers Invitational. The meet is one of the most competitive in the nation; it started with a Division 1 college cross country race, followed by numerous levels of high school competition. In order to even be entered into the "Elite" race, teams had to be ranked in the state level. Both Colerain varsity squads competed in these Elite races. On the boy's side, junior Craig Sulken finished 44th with a time of 17:03. Right behind him was sophomore Erik Tomczewski in 17:04, finishing 49th. In the girl's race, junior Sam Work led the team with a time of 20:27, followed by junior Allison Steinbeck with a time of 20:29. Freshman Julia Romero also ran very well, finishing 45th out of over 700 runners in the junior varsity race with a time of 22:30 that earned her a varsity spot.

Colerain Rushes Away From Thunderhawks!

Al Gabriel
WeAreColerain.com

Colerain rolled up an electric 558 yards of rushing on its way to a 48-24 victory over a pesky Lakota East team on Friday night at The Cage. Colerain forced a punt on East's first series and quickly scored on a 17 yard TD run by QB Greg Tabar on its ensuing drive. East did not get rattled by the Cardinals fast start, however. Behind the running of Pedro Powell and the passing of Stephen Donoghue East put together two very nice drives to leave the score 14-10 with just a minute left in the 1st quarter after a 5 yard TD run by Powell. Tabar took an option keeper up the middle and sprinted down the right sideline for a 50 yard touchdown as time expired in the first quarter and with Jordan Pleasants extra point the score moved to 21-10 and the momentum was all with the Cardinals. The play of the night came just before halftime when Junior RB, Tyler Williams, fielded a punt at his own 37, cut left down the Colerain sideline, picked up a block and then cut all the way back across the field at the East 40 and out ran the East coverage team on his way to a 63 yard punt return TD.
Williams also lead the Cardinals in rushing with 219 yards on just 11 carries.

News: Junior LB, Jarret Grace, picked up scholarship offers from Colorado and West Virginia this week bringing his total to three offers (Cincinnati).

WILD CARD –K - #26 Jordan Pleasants (Sr.) –6 for 6 on XP duties last week and looked good on kickoffs as well. His development throughout the season will be key for the Cardinals as a solid plackicker can NEVER be underestimated.

Keys to Victory for Colerain
SMART PLAY – 4, 5, 6…notice a trend? Those are the penalties, week 1 through week 3, for the Cardinals. Last week saw two personal foul calls against the defense. At best, penalties can absolutely kill a teams momentum and .at worst, can cost you a game. The Cardinals get a bit of a breather this week to tighten up the play and eliminate the penalties as much as possible, or at least stop the upwards trend. Also, don’t overlook Lakota East. Even though they are 0-3, this team is almost 30% effective on 3rd downs which means series will be extended if the defense doesn’t focus on getting off the field on 3rd down.
WIDE RECEIVERS – Much, much better in week 3. New “wide guards” did well even though Tyler only got the ball on 8 pitches, he had his best outing of the year with 69 yards. Tyler also caught a beautiful pass on a seam route for a 45 yard scoring play. Continued exposure for Tyler and Jordan Flueck should be in the Cards this Friday night.
DEFENSIVE LINE – Lakota East is their 2nd “run first” team in a row. Top playmaker is clearly Sr. RB Pedro Powell. He has more rushing attempts than the rest of the team combined. If the DL can get penetration and disrupt the plays in the backfield, Colerain’s chances will improve tenfold. The recipe for success is to stop Powell and make the QB Boyd beat you with his legs or his arm

Bottom-Line
Back on the winning track…excellent! The Cards enter GMC play this week as the 9-TIME DEFENDING CHAMPION. Lakota East has not beaten Colerain since 1999. This is a good way to ease into league play. Smart play, no turnovers and a stout defense should be enough to put another “W” in the books Colerain this week.

WeAreColerain.com 5 Year Anniversary, 2004-2009!

This week marks the official 5 year anniversary of WeAreColerain.com. The site first went live in week 4 of 2004. It is incredible that is has been 5 years, doesn't seem like it has been nearly that long.

When I started this website I never imagined it would turn into what it has today with video highlights, internet broadcasts of games and covering more and more sports. In the beginning the idea was to have some pictures and results of football games. The site has grown so much and our staff has grown also from 1 in the beginning to 6 today. It has been a great time and I look forward to what the future holds for WeAreColerain.com. I would like to thank our staff: Al Gabriel, Chris Himonidis, Brian Wyatt, Brandon Wyatt, Mike Noyes and everyone else who has contributed stories and articles in the past. Without your contributions the site would not be what it is today. I would also like to thank the Colerain athletic department for allowing us to do what we do, as well as our sponsors: Spade Performance, SRB Insurance Consultants and Heids Lanes, as well as the Colerain Boosters.

Just for kicks, here is a link to what the site looked like when it first was posted, it is amazing how much different it looks today.

Cards blank the Big Blue 2-0, Host Comets Thursday

Contributed by Mike Hoffman

September 15, 2009

JV

Colerain traveled to Hamilton High School tonight. Unbeknownst to the coach, the trainer for Hamilton would not let any player in a cast play, which left two players residing on the bench. Along with those two were two more players having to take the night off due to injuries. This left the Cardinals with only one player for substitution. The first half was dominated by Colerain. The lack of players, at this point, did not seem to faze the Cards. Ball movement and communication factored into Colerain controlling the first half. At half it was tied 0-0. The Cards had no subs in the second half which would prove to be detrimental. Hamilton scored about 10 minutes in on a pass from the corner to the middle. The Cards, however, showed no signs of quitting; they would continue to apply pressure, getting some nice shots on goal. With about 10 minutes to play the lack of depth start to show. Unable to keep the ball in Hamilton's end of the field, the Big Blue were able to score once more. The game ended 2-0 in favor of the Big Blue.

Varsity

Sporting some new jerseys, the Cardinals were hoping to change their luck tonight. The Card's started this game looking relaxed and confident. In what seemed to be a different game plan, Colerain consciously played the ball to the outside and kept the ball wide and the field spread. Kevin walker, playing outside mid, from about 20 yards and close to the sideline, scored a nice goal, placing the ball in the opposite top corner of Hamilton's goal. This gave the Cards the confidence they were looking for. Hamilton was able to generate a few shots on goal but Mitch Revetta was there for the saves. The first half ended with the Cards leading 1-0. In the second half Colerain's defense was strong, not letting Hamilton generate much offense. Colerain's offense continued to move the ball well. Ryan Theile dribbled the about 10 yards down the middle of the goal box, taking a nice shot that the Hamilton keep was just barely able to deflect, however, Conner Mcgee following the play, was there to bury the ball in the back of the net giving the Cards a 2-0 lead. Yet again the game was very physical causing the referee to hand out multiple yellow cards to keep the peace. The game ended with Colerain getting their first win in regular season play, hopefully generating some confidence for the tough games ahead.

Colerain host Mason at home on Thursday in what is speculated too be a tough match for the Cards.

For WeAreColerain.com

The girl's cross country team raced at the Princeton Invitational this week at Princeton High School, putting together their best team effort of the season despite competing on a challenging course and coming in second as a team. Junior Sam Work finished 4th overall with a time of 20:56. Junior Allison Steinbeck finished 6th overall, despite racing for the first time this season due to injuries, with a time of 21:08. Juniors Marisel Lopez and Stacey Sulken and senior Kristen Wells also raced well together, finishing within 13 seconds of each other. The junior varsity boys also competed at Princeton, with Junior David Friedhoff running a time of 19:38 and earning a varsity spot next week. The boy's varsity traveled north for the Tiffin Carnival, the largest meet in Ohio and the second largest meet in the nation with 40 teams and 276 runners in the varsity race. The team finished 18th out of those 40 teams, including many of the state's top teams. Senior Jeffrey Denny led the way with a personal best time of 16:36. Senior Zach Burt ran a personal best time in 17:02, closely followed by Junior Victor Zeinner at 17:06, another personal best.

Colerain vs. Elder Rivalry Spills on to the Pitch, Ends in 1-1 Draw

9/12/09

Junior Varsity

Cards against the Panthers tonight at Colerain. Colerain was a little short handed tonight as two players moved to varsity, one player was injured, and two other players were only able to play half a game. Despite all of that, the Cardinals dominated the match. Colerain showed an outstanding team effort, communicating, passing, and controlling the ball. Colerain's defense did an excellent job of showing patience, keeping the ball pushed forward, and supporting the offense well into Elder's half of the field. The Cards offense was able to generate many shots on goal throughout the match but could not finish. The game ended in a tie, 0-0, however all things considered the Cardinals played a great match.

Varsity

Pre-game warm-ups showed the Cardinals wanted a win badly. The Cards took the field moving some player around looking to create some energy. In the first half of the game there was a lot of back and forth play, with both teams able to generate some shots on goal. About 14 minutes into the second half, Elder committed a blatant foul inside their own box, allowing Senior Ryan Theile to score on a penalty kick. The game started to get physical at this point due to Elder's inability to create much offensively and Colerain's desire for a win. Elder, however, scored late, getting behind the Cardinal defense and finishing on a one on shot against Colerain's goalie. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving Colerain still looking for that ever elusive win.

Cards Fall 2-0 to Thunderhawks, Look to Rebound vs. Elder

Contributed by Mike Hoffman

September 10, 2009

Junior Varsity

Colerain played Lakota East at Colerain. Although the Cards lost 2-0, the match for the most part was controlled by Colerain. East was able to score 2 goals in the first half on simple runs starting at midfield. Colerain did a good job of moving the ball around the field and applying pressure; unfortunately they were not able to score a goal on many a attempted shots. Zach Raymond did an excellent job in the middle playing an aggressive game, fighting for every ball and showing an "I hate to lose' attitude.

Varsity

East came out strong tonight, setting the pace for what would be a long night for the Cardinals. The game was dominated by East's "under control" style of play. East's defense set the game's tempo by patiently controlling the ball and moving the back and forth across the field until they found a spot to penetrate. East was able to score 1 goal in the first half and 1 goal in the second half, winning 2-0. Although Colerain looked much better in the second half, being more aggressive and pushing forward, the "run and gun" style of play did not generate any points on this night.

Colerain's next match is Saturday against Elder.

Colerain Rolls Past Manual

Al Gabriel
WeAreColerain.com

It was Little Cards Night at the Cage and the big Cards did not disappoint the little ones.

The Colerain Cardinals, behind a revamped offensive line, racked up 461 yards rushing out of its Triple Option offense en route to a 42-0 victory over Dupont Manual on Friday night. The Cardinals were led by Sr. QB Greg Tabar's 221 yards (1 TD) and Jr. FB, Trayion Durham's 131 yards (2 TD's). Jr. WB Tyler Williams chipped in with 2 touchdowns on 69 yards rushing and an electrifying 36 yard TD reception from Tabar.

The revamped offensive line saw Sr. Captain, Brandon Good, move from Center to Guard and Jr. OL, Lex Ehrenschwender, step in at the Center position. The line opened up the middle of the field and made for easy reads as Durham and Tabar had gaping holes to run through for most of the game.

The Colerain defense held the Crimsons to 167 total yards while pitching its first shutout of the 09 season. Manual was led by Jr. Marcus Helm's 82 yards rushing.
Next up for Colerain is a home game this Friday night as the Cardinals open up GMC play versus Lakota East.

Technical difficulties on tonight's internet broadcast

We experienced some technical difficulties tonight in our first live game broadcast. We lost the internet signal allowed to us in the press box near the end of the second quarter. We did get reconnected about 15 minutes later but our broadcast never came back online. While we are very disappointed this happen, we are thankful to all who helped us get back online.

We are working diligently with the athletic department to find a solution to this problem and a more reliable internet source for our future broadcasts. Thanks to all who listened, we truly appreciate it and hope you will join us again this year for Colerain Cardinals football on WeAreColerain.com.

LB - #67 Jamie Niekamp (Sr.) – 6’2”, 208 lbs
CB - #28 Travis Carroll (Sr.) – 5’11”, 180 lbs
WILD CARD – Total Unfamiliarity…never seen them, do not know anyone that has seen them, have no clue until the pads hit for the first time. Should be exciting!

COLERAIN CARDINALS (0–2)
Last Game – Lost to Elder, 7-20
QB - #8 Greg Tabar (Sr.-CAPT) – looked much better rushing the ball against Elder, 105 yards on 14 carries
TB - #1 Tyler Williams (Jr.) – been stuck in neutral only mustering 35 against Elder which was preceded by a 24 yard effort vs. St. Xavier.
FB - #34 Trayion Durham (Jr.) – like Tabar, found some room to run against Elder’s D, 98 yards on 13 carries with Colerain’s only TD
OL - #71 Brandon Good (Sr.-CAPT) – rumor has it Mr. Good will be moving from Center to Strong Guard this week in an attempt to shake up the OL
DL - #50 Jake Blust (So.) – continues to be a strong contributor on defense
LB - #5 Tyon Dixon (Sr.) – had a big week vs. Elder racing sideline to sideline to make tackles. Emotional player
LB - #44 Jarrett Grace (Jr.) – @ 6’4”, 210 lbs, already offered by UC after limited action his Sophomore year and is leading the defense in tackles
DB - #21 Chris Dukes (Jr.) – 2nd year starter, struggled vs. much taller WR’s at Elder. His run-stopping skills will be tested this week.
DB - #7 Jovanta “Bam” Harrison (Sr.-CAPT) – continues to play solid, fundamental football in leading the secondary
WILD CARD – RB - #22 Chris Davis (Fr.) – If you listened to our podcast of the Freshman game vs. Elder last Friday, you know who this young man is. He made quite an impression on the Panthers last week and looks to shake up the Varsity squad by bringing his unique combination of strength, speed and clutch play-making ability to Friday Night Lights at the Cage. Keep an eye on this young man…

Keys to Victory for Colerain
OFFENSIVE LINE – “Third verse, same as the first.” Until this unit finds a way to be consistent and create running lanes for the skill guys, their play is going to be monitored. BIG time improvement week 2 vs. Elder as the Cards racked up 246 yards on the ground with 6 rushes over 20 yards. WeAreColerain.com has learned that lone returning starter from 2008, SR Capt. Brandon Good, is moving from Center to Guard in an attempt to give the OL a different look. Will it help? Got to trust in Coach Woltz that he will find the formula to make this unit improve as (and get use to this phrase) every week is a playoff week from here on out.
WIDE RECEIVER PLAY – Against Elder, QB Greg Tabar attempted 14 passes and completed 4 for 25 yards. Not sure when the last time a Colerain QB attempted 14 passes in a game but it is obvious that Coach Bolden is not afraid to turn his SR QB loose on the pass play. However, the concern here is the WR’s and their ability to block on the edge. Tyler Williams, if he is to get outside, needs good blocks to help spring him for long runs and for two weeks in a row, they don’t seem to be there. WeAreColerain.com has learned that Week 1 “Wild Card” JR WR Jordan Flueck (#24) will get the start this week and be asked to step up big-time in both the blocking and receiving aspects of the position. If he has what it takes to seal off a defender, this could be the week we see the Tyler Williams of old (or the Chris Davis of the future!).
COACHING – Two weeks, two losses and the playoffs in jeopardy. Coach Bolden has said repeatedly that he wouldn’t have changed anything about the first two weeks of the season, except for the outcome of the games. These young men need a win and it will be up to the coaches to deliver a game plan that, if executed properly, will do just that. Manual is a quick, athletic team that is also searching for their first win so putting people in the right spots to succeed is critical. With several changes throughout the offense, it will be interesting to see how the game plan unfolds.

Bottom-Line
0-2. Not something the Cardinals are used to but here we are. What’s done is done and now it’s time to move on. Colerain football players are resilient and now more so than ever, there is certainly “unfinished business” to attend to. Without question, every single game is a playoff game at this point. Just one more loss and the post-season is all but lost. The Cardinals have played two games against two very good opponents and mistakes were made, lessons learned. Now is the time to put those mistakes behind and use what was learned in those lessons. Manual is a solid team but not one the Cardinals cannot beat. 1 TD in 8 quarters of play for ANY Colerain team is almost unfathomable. The Crimsons are led by their quartet of SR LB’s who totaled almost 300 tackles last year. The Cards OL must open holes against this veteran group and those carrying the football for Colerain must run with authority this week. The time for smashmouth Colerain football is here. And if the offense is to throw the ball…it must be caught, plain and simple. The defense will be presented with a Wing-T offense run by a very athletic QB in Derek Woodmore. He is just beginning to click with his receiving core and could be dangerous when throwing to his big TE target, SR Cole Mosser. RB Marcus Helm will get the bulk of the carries and is a sparkplug at 5’7”, 185 lbs. He’s strong and he can move.

Stay the course: run the ball, stop the run. If Colerain can do these things, they can get that goose egg out of the “W” column for the first time in 2009.

Cross Country Week in Review

By Brendan McDonough
For WeAreColerain.com

The cross country team competed at the Greenville Invitational in Greenville, Ohio. The meet is the second largest in Ohio this year with over 20 teams and 200 runners in the varsity races alone. The boys' team finished 2nd among these teams. Junior Craig Sulken led the way, finishing 8th overall with a time of 16:55. Right behind him was sophomore Erik Tomczewski at 16:56, making him the fastest freshman or sophomore runner in the race. Almost every other runner set a personal-best time in the race as well, including several junior varsity runners. The girls' team finished in 6th place as a team despite several runners sitting out with injuries. Senior Kristen Wells finished 25th overall with a time of 20:55, followed closely by junior Sam Work at 20:56. Freshman runner Kabrella Clark also had a good race, finishing 38th with a time of 21:33 in only her second cross country race.
The week before, on August 29th, both teams competed in the Fairfield Invitational. The boys' team finished 3rd overall, with senior Jeffrey Denny and junior Curtis Marshall competing well for the team in addition to Sulken and Tomczewski. The girls' team finished 4th in their race, led by Sam Work along with good races from junior Stacey Sulken and freshman Julia Romero.

Colerain vs. Elder: A Retrospective Look

Chris Himonidis
WeAreColerain.com

We are just about 48 hours from an historical kickoff at Elder High School as the Cardinals will face off against Elder for the first time in history at Elder's fabled "Pit".

Take a few moments and look back on the rivalry of these two teams:

First Meeting Ever - 1995 Playoffs - Entering the game 10-0 and as City Champs, the Cardinals faced off against the 4th seeded Elder Panthers for the first time in school history. Colerain dominated Elder on the ground holding the Panthers to -2 yards rushing for the entire game and intercepted Elder QB John Lammers 3 times. Colerain would go on to win the contest 14-7 against a tough Elder squad and advance on to play in the State Semi-finals. The game is later forfeited by Colerain due to OHSAA sanctions for use of an ineligible player. Game is officially on the books as a 1-0 loss.

#1 Goes Down - 2000-Week 1 - Colerain faces off against Kyle Koester and the #1 ranked Elder Panthers with new QB Sean Jones behind center. Behind the stellar LB play of James Battle, Colerain shocks the city and wins, 14-7.
QB Jones stars on Showdown stage

The Rematch - 2000 Regional Finals - Colerain vs. Elder once again this season for the right to advance to the State Semi's. Colerain's defense came to play as the offense scored early and often and effectively made Elder's running game behind all-city star Kyle Koester moot. The Cardinal defense harassed Elder QB Matt Scholl all day and recorded 8 sacks and beat the Panthers 44-13.
Cardinals roll into state semifinals

The Big One - 2001 Regional Semi-Finals - In front of a state and playoff record crowd of 45,000+ at brand new Paul Brown stadium, the Cardinals and Panthers entered this much hyped contest as two teams ranked in the USA Today's Top 25 in the nation. The Panthers were looking to end their 3 game losing streak against Colerain and advance to the regional finals where GCL rival St. Xavier was waiting. The Cards were undefeated coming in at 11-0 on the backs of QB Sean Jones and the offense. It was a back and forth battle all night but the defense for Colerain struggled containing QB Keith Bolger and unknown SO RB Bradley Glatthar. The Cardinals pulled within a score at 28-21 early in the fourth but a missed FG and a TD drive by Elder put the game away as the Panthers ended the Cardinals season, 35-21.
Early score key to Panthers' victory

The Rematch, Part II - 2002 Regional Final - A new era of Colerain football arrived in 2002 with new QB Erick Fitzpatrick and a very young nucleus of players getting their feet wet. However, the expectations remained and the Cards found themselves once again in the playoffs facing off against Elder. The Panthers, led by standouts QB Rob Florian, RB Bradley Glatthar, WR Bill Poland and a superb offensive line were looking to return to the State Final 4 for the first time since 1996. Colerain, still upset after their season ending loss the prior year at the hands of the Panthers were looking to make their third trip to the State Final 4 under Coombs. The Panthers took a commanding 21-7 lead going into the 4th quarter but the Cardinals would not quit as they orchestrated 2 TD drives to tie the score at 21. Elder got the ball back with just under two minutes to play and put together a TD scoring drive to go up 28-21. That would be the final as Elder ended Colerain's season for the second year in a row and would go on and win their first title in school history.
Elder drives to state semis

THE Game - 2003 Regional Final - For the second straight year, the Elder Panthers were keeping the Cardinals from thier trip to the State Final 4. This year, the Panthers were defending state champions and were craving the repeat. Colerain entered the game 12-0 and City Champs. JR RB Mister Simpson and SR QB Erick Fitzpatrick led an offensive attack that dominated Elder's defense piling up 370 yards of offense to Elder's 198. Statistically, Colerain won every conceivable matchup sans one...the final score. 24-23, Elder. It was, and remains, in this author's opinion the single most difficult loss in Colerain playoff history.
Elder 24, Colerain 23
In defeat, men of Colerain deliver
Too many mistakes end up costing the Cardinals

Payback Game - 2004 Week 1 - The hype surrounding the 2004 team was at an all-time high as they entered their week 1 matchup against the 2-time defending state champion Elder Panthers. Emotions were still high on the Cardinal sidelines as the Panthers took the field. Knowing that this game would not end Colerain's season like it had the prior 3 meetings made no difference as the program and the community wanted this one bad. The Cardinals would not disappoint as revenge was extracted (partially) and the Cardinals soundly defeated Elder 21-3. The defense was stiffling as they sacked Elder QB Craig Carey 6 times. Elder was held to 60 total yards of offense which included -21 rushing yards...for the game. The 2004 Cards had arrived!

Colerain grinds down Elder

Demons Exorcised - 2004 Regional Quarter Final - If the Cardinals were going to complete their dream season and win their first state championship in school history, it was going to have to go through...you guessed it...Elder. This time, the Panthers visited Colerain for the first time ever as the #6 seed in the playoffs. Tension was high as Elder faithful had proclaimed all week that the pressure was clearly on the Colerain Cardinals. The game proved very tight through the first two and half quarters as the Cardinals led 10-3 at halftime. However, Colerain blew things open with a 21-0 third quarter and would finally exorcise their personal demons...the Elder Panthers...38-3. Colerain would, of course, go on to win their first and only football state title in school history.
Cards break through vs. nemesis Panthers
Colerain exorcises a demon

Long-Awaited Showdown - 2008 Regional Final - Third verse, same as the first. For the third time in this decade, the Cardinals and Panthers met for the Regional final and the right to advance to the state's Final 4. The region was wide open in 2008 but as the season wore on, it became pretty clear that Colerain and Elder would meet on the field for the first time in 4 years. The game was an instant classic as it matched Elder's high-powered offense against Colerain's stout defense. The Cards jumped on top first 7-0 but the Panthers immediately answered with two TD passes from Mark Miller to Tim O'Conner. The Cards offense stalled on ensuing drives and had to settle for two field goals to make it 14-13 Elder heading into the 4th quarter. Elder kicked a FG to go up 17-13 but the Cardinals staged a tremendous run to score their 2nd TD of the day to go up 20-17 on the back of backup FB Dom Carter who had replaced injured starter SO Trayion Durham in the 4th quarter. The Panthers drove one final time and Colerain's defense couldn't hold as K Tony Miliano booted a 25-yard FG to send the game to OT, the first in the history of these two schools. The Cards offense seemed a bit out of sync as their first possession in OT ended in a lost fumble. The Panthers all-world K Tony Miliano had his FG attempt to win the game blocked by the Cards. On to 2OT where Elder got the ball first and scored on their first play from scrimmage, a TD pass from QB Mark Miller to WR Josh Jones. The XP was good and the Panthers were up 27-20. Colerain had their shot as well but in similar fashion to the first OT, lost a fumble which Elder recovered and that was the ball game as Elder would go on and finish runner-up to State Champion St. Ignatius.

So what will this Sunday hold? Who knows, but chances are it will be special as history will be made as the first time either of these teams will face off against the other during the regular season on one of the schools' home fields. Add in LIVE ESPN covergae and it is truly a special moment for both schools.

Colerain, Elder have played some classics

Physical Play Leads to 0-0 Draw vs. Anderson, JV's win 2-1

Contributed by Mike Hoffman

9-1-2009

Junior Varsity

The boys JV soccer played host to Anderson tonight. Starting out, it seemed as if the Cards may have taken the game a little lightly, but by the middle of the first half things started to come together for the Cardinals. Joe Flohr, with about 19 minutes left in the first half made a nice header into the net of a pass from Brandon Dirr. However, Anderson would not go away. With about 7 minutes remaining in the half, Anderson was able to score off a nice shot outside the 18 yard line. The first half would end tied 1-1. Colerain came out in the second half ready to play. The Cardinals dominated most of the second half keeping the defense pushed up, allowing Drew Hoffman (outside defender) to make a few nice runs resulting in shots. Colerain would continue to apply the pressure, Austin Wessels dribbled down the outside flank and made a perfect pass to the middle, Jeff Gobeille being in the right place at the right time, was there to finish the ball giving the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. The game ended with a Cardinal Victory, final score 2-1.

Varsity

Forget about going to a football or hockey game if you want to see physical athletics, come to a Colerain soccer match. Colerain and Anderson started out about even, playing at both ends of the field with both teams getting some shots on goal. The game at this point was mostly a technical game with a lot of passing and a lot of quality ball control. The first half ended in a draw. The second half would prove to be more interesting. Neither team would be able to score but not from a lack of trying. The game got very physical, especially from the middle of the half on. There was a lot of slide tackling and a lot of fighting for the ball by both teams, some legal and most not so legal. The referee had to take control of the game. He did this by handing out yellow cards at almost every foul. It seemed as if they would get about 3 minutes of play in before another yellow card was handed out. The Cards had a few nice shots on goal and even one attempt that most likely would have ended in a goal if not for a questionable foul from behind. There are two sides to the game of soccer- some soccer fans like to see a more technical game with good passing and good ball handling, and some fans like the game to be more physical with lots of slide tackles and shoulder to shoulder fighting for the ball. As for me I like to watch a game with a lot of, and this game did not disappoint. Even though there were no goals scored in this game, to me it was not boring to watch.

Colerain's next match is on September 10, hosting Lakota East.

LB - #5 Tyon Dixon (Sr.) – blazing speed at LB position, 0.5 sack in week 1
LB - #44 Jarrett Grace (Jr.) – Is a wrecking machine @ 6’4”, 210 lbs, already offered by UC after limited action his Sophomore year
DB - #21 Chris Dukes (Jr.) – 2nd year starter, held his own and didn’t allow any long completions in week 1
DB - #7 Jovanta “Bam” Harrison (Sr.-CAPT) – 2nd year starter, 3 int’s in ‘08
WILD CARD – LB - #25 Joe Bolden (So.) – nephew of HC Tom Bolden, this 6’2” 210lb SOPHOMORE shared a sack with Tyon Dixon in week 1 and showed very well in his first varsity start against a balanced St. Xavier offense.

Keys to Victory for Colerain

OFFENSIVE LINE PLAY“Second verse, same as the first”, the inexperienced OL struggled at the point of attack against St. Xavier in week 1 and will need to have a big turnaround this week if the offense is expected to score. No question that the greatest level of improvement comes from game 1 to game 2 of the season and Coach Bolden and Coach Woltz will make sure the young men will be properly motivated and prepared to play in a hostile environment (more on that later). They must do a much better job opening up holes and holding their blocks to allow the magic of Tabar-Williams-Durham to work behind them.

DEFENSIVE SECONDARY – TACKLE! TACKLE! TACKLE! The offensive skill position players for Elder is the best group, by far, that Colerain will see all season and could be, top to bottom, the best in the state, if not the country…no joke. O’Conner, Welch, Chidemo, Brown, Coffaro are ALL “take it to the house” type of threats. Missed tackles or poor tackling technique can not happen this week as this special group of offensive playmakers only need to break one. Gang tackling is also in order. Colerain’s defense is at it’s best when 11 men meet at the ball and gang tackle. That must also be the case this week. Hit them hard and hit them often.

IGNORE THE HOOPLAWhen the whistle blows, the Cardinals will need to block everything out and focus on one play at a time. Look, this game has gotten incredible hype. First Varsity game EVER at the Pit not to mention the live ESPN coverage is bound to do that. However, the biggest factor is going to be the home crowd. Elder is notorious for having some of the most “enthusiastic” fans in the region and they create quite a homefield advantage for the Panthers.

Bottom-Line
The loss in week 1 against St. Xavier has made this game even bigger, if that was possible. The Cardinals could, emphasis on COULD, be playing for their playoff lives on Sunday. Hard to believe in week 2 but trust me, it’s a real possibility. The prospect of starting 0-2 is not something the Colerain Harbin gurus want to think about. So while most will view Colerain as the clear underdog in this game, the Cards need to take that huge chip firmly planted on their collective shoulder and use it to dictate tempo of the game. The offense must eat clock and most importantly, FINISH DRIVES WITH TOUCHDOWNS. Field goals are not going to beat Elder, plain and simple. The best defense against Elder is an offense exactly like Colerain’s. Eat the clock and score every time, or close to it. On defense, the Cardinals must avoid the big play and stupid penalties. Elder is a big play offense. They don’t need any help with penalty yards from the Cardinals on defense. Colerain cannot get into a shootout with Elder. If the Cardinals can do these things, they have a very good chance of leaving Price Hill on Sunday night with a victory over a very formidable opponent. And maybe most importantly of all, they will have wiped that nasty taste out of their mouths from week 1 as they can then focus on their home opener the following Friday against Louisville Dupont Manual.

Very well written article in the Enquirer from Paul Daugherty on the game this week from a slightly different angle. Can't stress enough how special this meeting is. Truly historic in these two schools history.

Not a whole lot of flashy highlights in week one. Just a lot of hard-nosed, hard-hitting football.
