Boys Basketball Update From Last Weekend

Ryan Jones
WeAreColerain.com

It was a busy and successful weekend for the boys’ basketball team as they beat Fairfield 57-50 at home on Friday night and followed that up with a convincing victory at Harrison 61-27 on Saturday night to move to 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in the GMC.

Friday night’s game against Fairfield was a hard-fought contest that ended with Colerain earning their first GMC win of the season. Although Colerain led the game wire-to-wire, the lead was down to just 2 points with under a minute left in the fourth quarter when senior Dan Friedhoff hit a huge jump-shot from the baseline to put the Cards up by 4. And even though Colerain was horrendous from the free throw line all night making a paltry 7 free throws on 20 attempts, they were able to add on 3 points from the charity stripe in the final 30 seconds to give the Cardinals a comfortable 7 point victory over the Indians.

Despite a great game from Fairfield’s Phillip Harris, who had 20 points and 6 rebounds and – only standing at about 5’ 10” tall – also threw down a pair of slam dunks, Colerain was able to win by shooting an extremely efficient 61.5% from the field.

Saturday’s game at Harrison wasn’t nearly as close as Colerain dominated the Wildcats from start to finish. Harrison couldn’t handle Colerain’s full court press as the Cards played absolutely suffocating defense all night and held the Wildcats to a staggering 17.6% shooting from the field. Junior Ken Kunkel added 15 points and 13 rebounds while playing only 19 minutes as Colerain pummeled Harrison 61-27 and moved to 5-1 on the season.

Coach Higgins added these remarks regarding last weeks games:
So far we have been able to win a few close games. The Fairfield game was very big for us because it was a league game and it gives the players some confidence going into the last games of 2008. We established a goal for our kids after the Middletown game that we wanted to be 6-1 for 2008 and we are now one game closer to that goal.(The Kings game was postponed due to weather). Every win we can get helps these players believe they can compete with teams in our league.

Coach Higgins also wanted to point out that the boys freshman basketball team is also off to a flying start with a 5-1 record as they begin GMC play. Great job, Cards.

Girls Weekly Update

Girls Basketball Week in Review 12/15 – 12/21

The Lady Cardinals basketball team suffered their first loss of the season this week as they fell to Mason on Wednesday night 65-57, but managed to rebound with a win at home Saturday afternoon over Oak Hills, 64-39.

Colerain was not able to avenge last season’s tournament loss to Mason as they lost to the Lady Comets in a tough game, 65-57. The Lady Cards actually led by a point heading into the fourth quarter but couldn’t close the deal as Mason’s offense was on fire in the final period. The usually stingy Colerain defense allowed Mason to shoot 47.8% from the field, which you rarely see against a Lady Cards D.

For some reason the Lady Comets seem to have Colerain’s number. Going back to last season the Lady Cards are 12-3 in their past 15 games with all 3 losses coming to Mason.

On Saturday afternoon the girls got back on track with a dominating win over Oak Hills, 64-39. Ten different Cardinals scored in this game as Colerain shot 51% from the field and held Oak Hills to 26.4% shooting. The victory moved Colerain to 6-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.

The Lady Cards are off this week until Saturday afternoon when they host Mount Healthy (2-3, 2-1) at 2:00. After that they travel to McAuley (1-5, 1-2) on Tuesday at 7:30.

Early Look at Future Colerain Opponent/School

By Chris Himonidis
(note: the contract for this game has not yet been signed but a verbal agreement is in place)

As previously announced exclusively here at WeAreColerain.com, Colerain High School football will take on DuPont Manual High School out of Louisville, KY in week 3 of the 2009 football season, pending a signed return contract from Manual. As anyone who follows Colerain football knows, finding opponents has been a real challenge for Colerain for many years so to lock down a potential 2-year, home and home commitment from anyone is a big deal. Below is a high level view of DuPont Manual High School for the Cardinal faithful. Enjoy!

Quickie Stats (from www.manualfootball.com):
Name: Dupont Manual High School
Location: Louisville, KY
Nickname: Crimsons
Colors: Crimson and White
Enrollment – Grades 10-12: 601 Boys, 798 Girls, total of 1,399 (as of 06-07)
Interesting fact: Manual has unique status in that it is completely a Magnet school, meaning it has no local school area, and every student there has to be accepted. While the school is basically downtown most of the student population comes from the suburbs.

Notable football accomplishments:
• 5-time State Champion (’25, ’38, ’48, ’59, & ’66)
• 2-time National Champion (’25 & ’38)
Recent Regular Season Record: 26-10 (‘06-’08)
Recent Playoff Record: 3-3 (‘06-’08) with all three losses coming against Lou. St. Xavier
Chief Rival: Male High School – Have played 126 times since 1893. Own a 41-79-6 record in the rivalry.

Prelim Team outlook for ’09: The Crimsons will have a change at QB for the first time in three seasons. Offensively, Manual has run the Wing-T in the past and this shouldn’t change in ’09. They are not loaded with D1 players but they are coached very well and play as a cohesive unit. They are consistently near the top of the class in 6A (big school) football in Louisville just behind state & national powers Trinity and St. Xavier. They compare very favorably to a school like Lakota West or Sycamore.

School facts (from www.dupontmanual.com):
duPont Manual-- The Magnet High School is an optional, comprehensive high school offering unique academic programs for qualified students with special interests, talents, and ambitions. The Magnet High School offers motivated students the opportunity to combine strong academics with specialized instruction in one of five component areas: University Academic Center; Visual Arts; Communications Media Arts; Youth Performing Arts School; and Mathematics, Science, and Technology. The Advance Program is also available for eligible students. Through a working relationship with the University of Louisville, qualified students in all programs may take college courses for credit while attending duPont Manual. Students have access to more College Board Advanced Placement courses at Manual than at any school in Kentucky.

Lady Cards Off to Fast Start

Ryan Jones
www.WeAreColerain.com

The Colerain Girls’ Varsity basketball team is off to an outstanding 5-0 start and is currently ranked sixth in the Division 1 Enquirer Coaches Poll. The Lady Cards have not lost a step under new head coach Christi Mack, who has led the team to its second consecutive season with a 5-0 start.

Colerain’s first three opponents couldn’t come within double-digits as they beat Ursuline 60-48, Northwest 76-40, and Middletown 57-22.

The first challenge of the season came at Harrison on Wednesday night in a game that came down to the final minute. With Colerain up by a point with under a minute to go, the Lady Cards played some stingy defense and forced a bad shot by Harrison. On the other end of the floor senior guard Katie Comello, who was having a fairly quiet night by her standards due to some foul trouble, hit two big free throws and then stole the in-bounds pass and hit two more free throws to put the team comfortably ahead with about 30 seconds to play.

The Lady Cards were led in scoring that night by junior guard Ashley Wanninger, who had 22 points and five rebounds including a few timely 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter to help put Colerain on top.

Colerain followed up that win on Wednesday with a win at home on Saturday afternoon over Fairfield in an ugly game with a final score of 49-38. The win was aided by a huge performance from senior Kara Patterson who contributed 9 points and a remarkable 16 rebounds, including 7 offensive boards. This effort helped offset an enormous game from Fairfield’s Brittany Fisher who had 21 points and 9 rebounds in a losing effort.

Early in the season, quite a few of the Lady Cards are putting up impressive numbers. Junior Ashley Wanninger currently leads the GMC in scoring average at 19.8 points per game; sophomore point guard Alexis Fitzpatrick is second in the GMC in assists, averaging 4.8 per game; senior Kara Patterson, with help from her big game against Fairfield, currently leads the GMG in rebounding with 10.3 rebounds per game; and senior Katie Comello is tied for second in the league in the steals category, averaging 3.8 steals per game.

But more importantly, Coach Mack currently has the team at 5-0 and playing some pretty good basketball on both ends of the floor. Not only is Colerain playing well on offense averaging 61.2 points per game, but they are playing some aggressive defense, allowing just 41.4 points a game while forcing an astounding 21.8 turnovers per game.

This week the Lady Cards travel to Mason (2-2, 1-1) on Wednesday where they have a huge score to settle with the Lady Comets. Last year Colerain’s season was ended early when they were upset by Mason in the state tournament in an exciting game that ended in heartbreak for the highly-ranked Colerain squad. They will be looking for a little revenge this week and could use some help from the fans, so make sure to show up and cheer on our undefeated Lady Cardinals this week at 7:30 up in Mason.

Also later this week Colerain will be hosting Oak Hills (3-2, 0-2) on Saturday at 2:00. So if you can’t make it to the Mason game this week, be sure to come out and support the team at our home gym.

Cardinals Thumped by Middletown

Colerain took one on the chin Friday night at Colerain as the second ranked Middies used a balanced offensive attack and suffocating defense to maul the Cards 82-42.
Game notes to be added later.

on a side note: Colerain's Ryan Foster leads the city in steals with an outstanding 3.7 per game average.

We were able to catch up with head coach Kevin Higgins for a few comments about the upcoming week in Colerain basketball.

WAC: Coach, you have a week off before your next game. Is there anything you can take away from the Middletown game to improve/build upon going foward?

Coach Higgins: We gathered a lot out of the game. It gave us a great indication on our weaknesses as a team. Some of them we can get better at and others we have to do a better job of hiding. We will focus on a lot of fundamentals and conditioning early in the week, focus on getting us better. With the Middletown game being the 4th game in 7 days, this week off gives us a chance to focus on ourselves and getting better as a team.

WAC: Coach, you mentioned the week off, but you follow that up with a brutal stretch of three games in a four day period before the holidays. How important is this stretch and how do you prepare for it as a team?

Coach Higgins:This next set of games is very important to us. We mentioned that right away to our team after the Middletown game. We feel we can compete and win each of the following games as long as we focus on getting better and improving in what we do as a team. We have to defend better and become more diverse on offense and have some players step up because of the recent losses from the team. Playing that many games is difficult because the ability to prepare for the opponent is limited so the players have to be able to adapt to different styles and players in short amount of time

WeAreColerain.com thanks coach Higgins for taking the time to give us insight to the Colerain basketball team. Come out and support your Cardinals. They'd love to hear the 'WE ARE COLERAIN' chant, too!

Thank you, Seniors

As the season went along of course we had our favorite seniors to talk to and watch play. Brandon White and Colin Lozier were great quotes and talked about that game of football in such a way that I have no doubt that both would make great coaches some day. Both have bright futures in whatever field they choose. Cole Pasqaule and Nick Preissman are so soft spoken that it if you met them away from the football field you would not know how ferocious either were.

To all the seniors we talked with and those we didn't get a chance to: Thank you. Your contributions (1 R4 title and 2 R4 finalists) has furthered the tradition and mystique of Colerain Football!

Highlights from Elder Game

Elder Postgame Interview with Coach Bolden

Cardinals fight to the end, fall to Elder 27-20 in double OT

The Colerain Cardinals fought hard in a tough 27-20 double overtime loss to the Elder Panthers last night. Colerain trailed much of the game, but put together a big drive late in the fourth quarter to take the lead. Elder was able to move into field goal range and hit a field goal with a couple minutes left to tie the game and force OT.

In OT, the Cardinals took the first possession and on the third play had a bad exchange between the QB and FB and lost the ball. Elder played for a field goal, which the Cardinals blocked, giving them new life.

In the second OT, Elder took the ball first and scored a TD pass on the first play. Colerain came back and on the second play put the ball on the ground, which was recovered by Elder, thus ending the game.

All in all, the Cardinals fought hard to the end and had chances to win, but came up short. I know I speak for most in the Colerain community when I say that this team put together an incredible season, beyond most of our expectations. This was thought to be kind of a rebuilding year, but it the exactly opposite. Congrats to the seniors on this team for leading this young group of Cardinals.

Thanks Colerain for a great year!!

How they got here: Regular Season
Elder (9-1 Overall, 3-0 GCL) finished the regular season on an 8-game winning streak. Their only loss of the season came in week 2 at the Herbstreit Challenge where they fell to nationally ranked St. Thomas Aquinas (FL), 35-24. Elder’s season has been characterized mainly by a dynamic offense led by GCL Player of the Year QB MARK MILLER (Jr.). The defense has done more than hold it’s own against some big name opponents this year as well allowing just 16 points/game.

Colerain (9-1, 6-1 GMC Champions) has had a more consistent journey through the season with their only loss coming in week 7 at Middletown, 39-42. Tough tests early on against St. Xavier and McKeesport (PA) were critical as Colerain had to hold off furious upset attempts from Mason and Sycamore AT HOME to earn the #1 seed in the Division I, Region 4 playoffs.

How they got here: 2008 Playoffs: Elder (11-1) certainly enjoyed the confines of their cozy Pit in week 11 as they blasted GWOC representative Centerville (7-3, 3-2 GWOC) right out of the stadium with an impressive offensive display, 52-27. The game was 38-13 going into the 4th quarter. In that game, Elder amassed 347 yards passing and 177 yards rushing. It was a complete effort by the Panthers. In week 12, a different team seemed to show up at Nippert Stadium. Playing GWOC-C Champion Northmont (10-1, 5-0 GWOC), the Panthers struggled mightily on offense. While the Panthers collected just under 300 yards of total offense, they were only able to visit the land of 6 one time the entire game, and that came in the 1st quarter. They were down 10-7 heading into the 4th when K ANTHONY MILIANO (Jr.) does what he does best…boot 2 FG’s to put the Panthers up for good, 13-10.

The Cardinals (10-1) were pushed to the brink in week 11 by the Moeller Crusaders. With the score knotted at 10 half-way through the 4th quarter, LB TYON DIXON (Jr.) scooped up a Moeller fumble and raced 88 yards for the go-ahead and eventual winning score. Colerain held Moeller in check with an interception late and ran out the clock inside the Moeller red zone to win and advance, 17-10. In week 12, the Cards looked much better defensively as they were able to effectively shut down GWOC-C member Huber Heights Wayne (8-3, 2-3 GWOC) and score their second shutout in their past 3 games. The Cardinals were rock solid on the ground, as usual, racking up 337 yards on the ground at a 6.0 avg. Three RB TYLER WILLIAMS (So.) TD runs and a K JORDAN ROSS (Sr.) 22 Yard FG was all Colerain needed to secure their place in the Regional Final against Elder.

• RUN…THEN PASS – Look, it’s not a secret that Elder likes to throw the ball. It is what they do to score points. However, they are not going to be able to do that exclusively against an underrated Colerain secondary. The Cardinals are much closer to Northmont in skill level than Centerville. I think the Panthers are going to have to establish the run early to show their balance on offense. RB NICK GRAMKE (Sr.) could be an X factor in this game. He has carried the ball only 3 times this post-season, but two of those touches have been for TD’s. He is much bigger and stronger than RB ADAM BROWN (Jr.) and would certainly have an advantage against an undersized Cardinal DL. Mixing his talents with Brown’s outside running ability would keep the safeties and DB’s up just a bit and would allow QB MARK MILLER (Jr.) the ability to hit his big receivers in stride down the field for big gains.
• ASSIGNMENT FOOTBALL – No difference here vs. the Wayne preview. Despite the impressive win over Centerville, Elder struggled mightily to slow down the Elks rushing attack. Centerville rushed the ball 64 times for 320 yards. That’s a 5.0 yard avg/rush. And for a team that was down, the Elks never felt the need to attempt a lot of passes as they only went to the air 9 times all game. They just did what they do but unfortunately, were unable to slow down (at all!) Elder’s passing attack. The key players here are going to be the LB’s and Safeties for Elder. They are going to have to keep their assignments and tackle well because if Colerain’s RB’s get space, they are faster and more elusive than the Elder secondary and will rip off 8, 9, & 10 yard chunks at a time.
• THE HEAD MAN – Doug Ramsey has 2 State Championships to his credit. He has been around the Elder house for quite some time and knows how it works. He comes into this game with TONS of big game experience and specifically, has designed many a game plan to stop Colerain’s option attack. It was Doug Ramsey, not St. Xavier HC Steve Specht, who was the first HC in the Cincinnati area to give Colerain fits offensively. He is going to have to dust off some tapes from almost a decade ago to show these kids how to beat Colerain because they haven’t done it in 5 years. However, if there is a Ricky Brown or Drew Metz on the defense, Coach Ramsey will know how to use them and will need to guide his relatively young team with a cool hand on Saturday night. He clearly has the coaching advantage over his counterpart on the Colerain sideline and he will need to use that experience and sense of “Been there, done that” if Elder is to move on to the State Tournament.
COLERAIN
• BE PERFECT – There is no other way to say it. The offense must simply BE PERFECT. They cannot afford incorrect reads, penalties or God forbid, turnovers. Elder’s offense is a quick strike offense that can bury you in a heartbeat and the Cardinals simply do not have an offense to get into a high-scoring affair. The past two weeks have been sub-par in terms of offensive output. They have been the lowest offensive output since weeks 1 & 2. That cannot happen against Elder. The Cards will need upwards of 28+ points to have a chance in this game and it rests solely on the shoulders of QB GREG TABAR (Jr.) to get that done.
• HEAD’S UP! – Most think the key for Colerain defensively is to put pressure on their QB Miller to force mistakes and take advantage. I am not going to go down that path because quite simply, I have seen this DL enough to know that pressuring the QB is not something they are capable of doing on a consistent basis. They are too small and against a larger, more experienced group of Sr. OL from Elder, the DL will struggle. So, it falls in the hands of the secondary to keep their HEADS UP as the ball will be in the air often. The DB’s are going up against a very good group of receivers and one player concerns me the most…TE ALEX WELCH (Jr.). He doesn’t get the press of some others on this team but he is big and talented and Colerain always seems to struggle with big and talented TE’s. You have to believe that Jones and O’Conner/Del Prince will get theirs, but the Defense cannot allow Welch to have a big game. If he is catching seam passes for 5+ yards every time, it could be a long night for the Colerain defense. Also, when they DO get the chance to lay a lick on the QB, they need to hit him like a Mack truck. He has never played Colerain before so he has no idea what is about to hit him. Make him have nightmares for a year about the hits he is about to endure and the Cards might just be able to rattle him enough to force some mistakes.
• LESSONS LEARNED – Remember the lessons learned from this season. Go all the way back to August and remember what it took to beat St. Xavier and McKeesport. Those were tight, intense games that required concentration and effort to win. Saturday will be no different. Elder is the best team Colerain will have faced all year and the players and coaches (and fans!) need to remember that when we fall behind (and we will), it doesn’t mean the end is near. It simply means that the Cardinals will have another chance for a comeback. These young kids must KNOW that they are never out of any game…ever. It’s time to see how much these young Cardinals have grown in the past 12 weeks. It’s time to see how much they’ve learned.

Bottom – Line
Number 1 (Elder) vs. Number 2 (Colerain) in the city. It’s the game that every prep football fan has been waiting for. No more words, no more speculating, no more yapping. It’s here.

Offensively, Colerain has got to be perfect. Absolutely NO TURNOVERS this week and a stingy, ball control offense are the game plan this week. Nothing cutesy or out of the ordinary is necessary. If the Cardinals are chucking the ball all over the place, we have reason for concern. Do what you do and sprinkle in a pass here and there to keep the Panthers honest. But do not stray from what got you here. That is a recipe for disaster.

Defensively, wow…what a task this will be. Elder overlooked a very good Northmont team last week. That won’t happen this Saturday. Elder has been looking to re-establish themselves in the city and this is their chance to do it. Beating two Dayton teams to get here doesn’t give them near the satisfaction they will garner from beating Colerain. The Cardinals must play smart, ball-hawking defense. The ball will be in the air enough that an INT returned for a TD may be in the Cards this week. But most importantly, THE DEFENSE, AS A UNIT, MUST TACKLE BETTER THAN THEY HAVE LATELY!!! This is a weakness on this team that still completely befuddles me. A broken tackle by either the RB BROWN or any of the WR’s will result in big-play city for Elder and that’s not good.

Familiar Foe Awaits...

Al Gabriel
WeAreColerain.com

Beginning with a 14-7 win over then number 1 Elder in the first game of 2000, there has been no game in Cincinnati quite like playing Elder for Colerain or its fans. Colerain used the regular season win at UC's Nippert Stadium to spring board into a program that has found itself playing for the Region 4 title for the seventh time this decade, including a victory over Elder in the 2000 Region 4 title game. While Doug Ramsey remains firmly in command of the Panther football program, Colerain coach, Tom Bolden, will make his head coaching debut in this fierce rivalry. But coach Bolden is no stranger to the hype as he was the Colerain QB coach/Assistant OC in 2004 when Colerain duplicated the 2000 accomplishment of beating Elder in the regular season and following it up with a post season victory.
Elder has had is share of success, though, in the rivalry ending Colerain's season in 2001, 2002 and 2003. The 2002 and 2003 games were both for the regional championship and are amongst the best high school football games this city has ever witnessed.

a quick look back:

2000: Colerain 14 Elder 7
2000: Colerain 44 Elder 10 R4 Final
2001: Elder 35 Colerain 21 R4 Semi-Final
2002: Elder 28 Colerain 21 R4 Final
2003: Elder 24 Colerain 23 R4 Final
2004: Colerain 21 Elder 3
2004: Colerain 38 Elder 3 R4 Quarter-Final

What's in store for 2008? We will soon find out. Stay tuned to www.WeAreColerain.com for a full game preview and pregame comments from coach Tom Bolden.

RED OUT THE WARRIORS!

Red Out The Warriors!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before we did the interview last night, I asked coach Bolden if he would have any problems if we (wearecolerain.com) called for a 'Red Out' this Saturday at Nippert. Coach Bolden said he did not...

so...

If you are student at Colerain who reads Yappi or www.WeAreColerain.com and plan on attending the game: Wear RED!

If you are student at Colerain who plans on wearing RED to the game on Saturday: Bring three friends and make them wear RED, too!

If you are parent, realative, almunus, teacher or fan of Colerain and will be at the game on Saturday: Wear RED!

If you have friends or family who will attend the game but aren't visitors to Yappi or www.WeAreColerain.com: First, tell them about the website (shamless plug) THEN tell them to wear RED to the game.

Go Cards! Wear RED!

Coach Bolden Interview: Wayne Preview

Coach Bolden discusses the Warriors and game preperation.

Colerain will be the home team, wearing red jerseys and will occupy the press box side of Nippert Stadium.

I floated the idea of a 'Red Out' past coach Bolden and he was all for it.

How they got here
Wayne (7-3 Overall, 2-3 GWOC) has had an up and down season. They got a big boost early in the year by beating traditional St. Louis (MO) power East St. Louis Senior, 20-12. It all came to a crashing halt when Sophomore phenom QB BRAXTON MILLER got hurt on the 1st play of the 2nd half against Northmont. With MILLER believed to be out for the year, Wayne was forced to go to their 4th and even 5th string QB’s and would eventually lose, 17-7 to the Thunderbolts. After holding on to beat Beavercreek with Freshman QB TONY PETERS at the helm, Wayne could not maintain momentum as they suffered their worst loss in GWOC history at the hands of their bitter rival, the Centerville Elks, 31-14 the following week. Wayne finished on an up note by beating rival Springfield, 20-14 in week 10.

Colerain (10-1, 6-1 GMC Champions) has had a more consistent journey through the season with their only loss coming in week 7 at Middletown, 39-42. Tough tests early on against St. Xavier and McKeesport (PA) were critical as Colerain had to hold off furious upset attempts from Mason and Sycamore AT HOME to earn the #1 seed in the Division I, Region 4 playoffs.

2008 Playoffs: Wayne (8-3) had absolutely no trouble dispatching CPS Cinderella Woodward (10-1) last week at home. The Warriors ran rough shod over the Bulldogs and were leading 45-0 at halftime with the final score being 52-0. The Warriors held Woodward to 11 Total Yards of offense and 4 1st downs for the entire game. The big takeaway was the return of Senior QB Ryan Bitsko (6’2”, 195lb) who hadn’t seen ANY game action since Wayne’s 35-7 win over Springfield South on October 5, 2007.

The Cardinals (10-1) were pushed to the brink in week 11 by the Moeller Crusaders. With the score knotted at 10 half-way through the 4th quarter, JR LB Tyon Dixon scooped up a Moeller fumble and raced 88 yards for the go-ahead and eventual winning score. Colerain held Moeller in check with an interception late and ran out the clock inside the Moeller red zone to win and advance, 17-10.

Keys to Victory
WAYNE
• BALANCE – The Wayne offense must show balance. They aren’t going to be able to run the ball or throw the ball exclusively. The OL specifically is going to have to do a good job slowing down a small but quick DL. Quick rising DL/LB DAMON SIMS of Colerain could cause problems for this OL who must protect a QB who has played 1 game this season against a vastly overmatched Woodward Bulldogs squad.
• ASSIGNMENT FOOTBALL – This is key when facing any option team. For those that see Colerain on a regular basis, there is at least an idea on how to stop their offense. Unlike Centerville, Colerain is a true triple option team. The QB makes the read on the line of scrimmage and dictates where the play is going to go. Wayne has a tremendous DL, arguably the strength of their team, and they are going to have to play disciplined assignment football to win this game. They are fast and athletic and must use their football savvy to slow down the 3-headed monster rushing game. That can only be done if they follow their assignments and tackle well.
• BIG MO – No…not Moeller…MOmentum. If the Warriors want to pull off the upset, it would behoove them to focus on winning two things: turnovers and field position. These are key because one (turnovers) usually begets the other (field position). If they can win these two key areas of play, that could give them momentum throughout the contest and potentially provide a very close game 4th quarter.
COLERAIN
• FIND THEMSELVES – Not sure which offense showed up last Saturday at the Cage but it was not the same Cardinal offense that has averaged 35 points and 388 yards per game. It sounds silly to say, but the offense needs to prove themselves against Wayne. Part of that is coaching (see below) and part of that is the entire offensive unit. The OL looked like a sieve at times against Moeller and the usually steady hand and decision making of QB GREG TABAR was clearly not on. Credit to Moeller’s defensive game plan, certainly, but do not discount the fact that if this team plans on going upstate to achieve their ultimate goal of the 2nd state championship in school history, the offense is going to have to play considerably better than they did against Moeller.
• STOP GEIGER – Every defensive player is going to have to get to know #34 up close and personal. He is the key to the Wayne offense…period. ERIC GEIGER leads the team in rushing, is 3rd in receiving, 1st in KO return yardage and avg and 1st in number of punts taken. This guy is all over the field. Putting it simply, he accounted for 43% of the Warriors scoring during the regular season and 57% of all the yards gained from scrimmage. Stop him and Wayne will struggle to point points on the board.
• COACHING – The coaching staff is young and inexperienced, no question. They are growing and learning “on the job” so to speak and some would say that to merely get to this point and still be playing is a tremendous accomplishment. I would venture that the Colerain coaches would disagree. They expected to be here and beyond, as they should. But the deeper they go, the better and more experienced coaching staffs they will face. The head coach at Wayne, Jay Minton, has plenty playoff games and big games on his resume. The Cardinal Coaches must be ready to make better half-time adjustments than they did last week against Moeller if they have expectations of playing in their 6th Regional Final in the past 7 years.
• X FACTOR – BraXton Miller. He’s out for the year…or is he? My bet says he is and he isn’t a factor on Saturday. But if he is ready to play, Colerain will need to have a plan in place to stop this dynamic Sophomore from Huber Heights.

Bottom – Line
For some reason, the overall feel from Colerain fans is that this game HAS to be easier than last week’s game against Moeller. I don’t necessarily understand that reasoning but I do think this game will have a better looking result.

Offensively, the Cards will come to play and prove they are not the team we saw last week scoring only 10 offensive points. I think the pressure of that first playoff win is off these young kids and now they know they can just play. That being said, Wayne is no easy task and will prove a very formidable opponent for the Cards on offense.

Defensively, stay the course. The defense played very well last week against Moeller and has looked good for over a month now. The days seem to be gone of giving up huge chunks of yardage and points to the likes of Mason, Sycamore, and Middletown. The play of the DL is going to be critical in this game as the Senior RB for Wayne is no slouch and wants to prove that he can run against the best. I think he will run well, just not well enough.

Cardinals win in a game that is tight throughout…until the fourth quarter when QB GREG TABAR hits a few passes and the running lanes open up for FB TRAYION DURHAM to bull through a tired DL and score the go-ahead TD.

SCORE PREDICTION
Wayne – 14
Colerain - 21

Possible Sites for regional championship game

First, Colerain has to beat Huber Heights Wayne (Saturday, 3 p.m.) and Elder has to beat Clayton Northmont (Saturday, 7 p.m.) in the Division I regional football semifinals at UC's Nippert Stadium this weekend.

Scenarios for the Saturday, Nov. 15 regional final (7 p.m. kickoff):

-Should it be Colerain-Elder (as most expect), the game almost certainly would be at Nippert. That is the word from OHSAA assistant commissioner Hank Zaborniak, in a telephone interview today.

-Should it be Wayne-Northmont, Zaborniak said it probably would be played at Dayton's Welcome Stadium.

-Should it be a Cincinnati team against a Dayton team, Zaborniak said the game probably would be at Nippert primarily because of more seating capacity.

Nothing will be set until Sunday (Nov. 9), when the OHSAA makes the official pairings for all regional finals.

Info provided by The Cincinnati Enquirer

Ticket Info for Saturday

From Scott Wilhoit of UC, site manager for Saturday's Division I regional football semis at Nippert Stadium:

-All presale tickets will be $7 (students and adults).
-All tickets at the gate will be $12.

-One ticket is good for both games (Colerain-Huber Heights Wayne at 3 p.m., then Elder-Clayton Northmont at 7 p.m.). The stadium will not be cleared between games.

The four-hour spread (3 p.m. and 7 p.m.) is mostly about giving the second-game teams time to warm up on the game field, Wilhoit said. The starting times are based on the OHSAA brackets, with the top of the bracket going first (Colerain-Wayne, followed by Elder-Northmont).

Coach Bolden's Comments: Lakota West

">

Colerain's Swagger Returns in Dominating Win Over West!

The swagger is back.

Colerain running backs followed the blocks of their inspired offensive line and decimated the highly touted Lakota West Firebird defense to the tune of 446 rushing yards Friday night at West. The Cardinals were given a scare on the opening posession when senior leader Brandon White left the game with a sprained knee. White would return to action shortly thereafter and help clear the way for three 100 yard rushers. "It feels good. That's one of the best defenses we've played" said White after the game. When asked about the condition of his knee the senior Captain shrugged it off. "I'll be a little sore tomorrow, but I'm good."

Colerain jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the strength of two TD runs by Tyler 'Flash' Williams (21 yards, 3 yards) but found itself in a close ball game after West siezed momentum by executing, to perfection, a fake punt from its own end of the field. After Jordan Hicks 42 yard scamper the Firebirds SEC bound (Ole Miss) running back, Stephen Houston, powered through would be Cardinal tacklers en route to a 17 yard touchdown scamper that made the game 14-7. It was a gut check moment for a team playing its best competition since the stunning loss to Middletown two weeks ago. On the road, against a great defense and on senior night, no less. It took the Cardinals less than two minutes to negotiate 54 yards capped by Flash's third touchdown run from four yards out. From there, the Cardinal swager had returned and the contest was never in doubt.

Cardinals rough up Lakota West 35-13

The Cardinals came out and a statement last night against West with a decisive 35-13 win. After West's 34-7 win over Middletown last week, many thought this might be a tough challenge for the Cardinals. The Cardinals rose to the challenge and came out firing early. Colerain ran for 446 yards, led by Greg Tabar who ran 22 times for 152 yards and a td. Tyler Williams added 151 yards on 14 carries and 3 tds and Trayion Durham pitched in with 19 carries for 132 yards and 1 td.

Colerain v. Fairfield

Colerain coming off of its first conference loss in nearly a decade, took it out on Fairfield last week. You could say it was a nightmare of sorts for the Indians. Therefore, Metallica's new song "All Nightmare Long" is used for the background music this week.

Colerain Falls to Middie Magic...

Congrats to Middletown on a well earned victory. The Cardinal defense wasn't totally dominated but they were victimized by some great players and there is no shame in that. My take after the interview with coach Bolden is that Colerain will answer the way Colerain teams answer: Hard work, preperation and determination. There's a whole lotta season still to play and the Men of Colerain should continue to hold their heads high and work hard like all that have come before them and all that are yet to come.

A quick note about this video...I chose the Bush song 'Comedown' as the background music because it was a heck of a 9 year ride to get to this point and nobody really wanted to 'Comedown' from the high horse we've been riding all these years in the GMC. But the truth is, I believe this loss is a good one. A new streak can (and I believe will) arise from the remnants of the Middletown game. I also ended the video with a couple of Middie highlights out of respect for the game, Middie fans and Middie players. They earned it and I thought it was fair to acknowledge them.

The Cardinals 61 game GMC winning streak ended tonight at the hands of the Middletown Middies at Barnitz Stadium 42-39. From the staff at WeAreColerain.com hats off the Middies for a great game and great victory.

Cardinals move up to No. 8 in USA Today Poll

The Cardinals have moved from No. 9 to No. 8 in the latest USA Today poll. I don't believe they have been ranked this high than 2004 when they were No. 5, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

In other national polls, the Cardinals are No. 19 in the PrepNation poll.

Congrats!

Mason faces big test in Colerain

By Mark Chalifoux • mchalifoux@communitypress.com • September 21, 2008

MASON - The Mason Comets have been improving, but face their toughest test of the season when they visit nationally ranked Colerain Friday, Sept. 26.

Mason head coach David Sedmak said he's seen the Cardinals play a few times and that Colerain has a "typical Colerain team.

"They are big, strong and fast," he said.

Sedmak said it's not hard to motivate the team to play Colerain and that, in some respects, the team was "too cranked up" last year, which caused some problems for the Comets in the 35-14 loss.

"We had some cases of guys missing assignments and when you play the triple option if guys miss assignments it can really hurt you," he said.

Colerain is ranked No. 9 in the USA Today top 25 poll as the Cardinals won their first four games against top-notch competition.

Sedmak said it would be important for his players to not let Colerain's reputation play too much of a role in the game.

"You can't let the uniform of name of the school or what guys look like intimidate you," he said.

"They have 11 players and we have 11 players. We played four good teams this year and played three of them pretty tough.

"The kids just need to believe in each other."

Sedmak said Mason doesn't have one or two playmakers that stand out, but that the Comets have a lot of good pieces that need to come together for Mason to succeed.

"We have a lot of pretty good players and if they play well and do what they are supposed to we can be successful," he said.

"We've done a lot of things pretty well. We need to do better but we're a much better team than we were last year as this time and we're close to being a good team but we can't get over the hump."

A win over Colerain would be a major way to get over the hump, but the Cardinals boast a strong defense and two of the top rushers in the conference in Trayion Durham and Tyler Williams.

Sedmak said his team needed to get more consistent and that there are no shortcuts to arrive there.

"There's no magic wand," he said.

"I've been using this phrase a lot lately, but you have to put one foot in front of the other and you have to keep going and be focused and do your job."

Highlight Reel from Sycamore Game

Coach Bolden Interview: Sycamore

Interception Return Ignites Cardinals to 60th Straight GMC Win!

Nicholas Priessman stepped in front of Casey Maclean's pass in the left flat late in the 3rd quarter Friday night and help spark Colerain to a 35-14 win over GMC foe Sycamore at The Cage. The final score does not indicate how close the game was through nearly three full quarters of football. Greg Tabar's 28 yard TD scamper put Colerain up 21-14 just three minutes after Maclean tied the score at 14 with a nifty 11 yard TD run of his own. With time winding down in the 3rd quarter Colin Lozier stuffed two Sycamore rushing attempts at the line of scrimmage forcing the Aviators into a 3rd and long situation and that is when Priessman provided the cushion that the Cardinals had been looking for all night. "It was huge momentum shift for us" said coach Bolden. "Our kids feed off the crowd and that play woke our crowd up".

Coach Bolden admitted that the wind storm and subsequent power outtages affected his team's preperation for the game. "We practiced, but there is no question we were out of our routine and I think that's why we were a little flat in the first half."

Three Colerain players broke the century mark in rushing on Friday. Crash Durham lead the Cardinal ground attack with 144. Tabar and Flash Williams contributed 103 and 102 respectively. The electrifying Bud Golden, the 2nd highly regarded college prospect Colerain's defense has faced in as many weeks, lead all rushers with 151 (a staggering 10.1 per carry average) that included a 35 yard TD run that saw the Illinois recruit outrace the Cardinal secondary into the endzone. All things considered, it was not one of Colerain's prettier efforts. But as coach Bolden addressed his team after the game he reminded his players what it means to face adversity and stare it down. "When you face it and work hard, you can whip it" a fired up coach told his team before breaking the huddle and send his kids off for the night.

Colerain hosts Mason next week at the Cage.

Player of the game:

With two interceptions tonight and the momentum changing TD, the honor goes to Nicholas Priessman.

Game notes: Colerain did not attempt a pass tonight. Tabar was 0-0 of 0 yards on the final stat sheet. Colerain outgained the Aviators 348 to 271. The crowd was treated tonight by a US Army flyover at halftime.

Scoring Summary
Colerain-Tabar 10yard Run. Ross Kick.
Sycamore-Golden 35yard Run. Stein Kick.
Colerain-Durham 1yard Run. Ross Kick.
Sycamore-Mclean 11yard Run. Stein Kick.
Colerain-Tabar 28yard Run. Ross Kick.
Colerian-Priessman 36yard INT return. Ross Kick.
Colerain-Williams 66yard TD Run. Ross Kick.

Rivals National Poll a joke!!

To prove how ridiculous and what a waste of time national polls are, try this on for size.

In the current Rivals Top 100 National Poll, St. X has jumped to No. 15 from No. 24, while the Cardinals moved from No. 22 to No. 20. So a team the Cardinals beat has jumped them in the national polls based on a win over a highly ranked team that had yet to play a game.

Why do we care about these polls???

Flash and Crash Pave Way For 5 TD Performance for Tabar

Tyler 'Flash' Williams and Trayion 'Crash' Durham followed up last week's explosive performance (424 yards on 36 carries) with a more workman like effort. Williams and Durham combined for 354 yards on 55 carries (Durham carried an amazing 37 times for 221 yards) for a 6.44 yards per carry average. It was the Super Sophs heavy lifting and the offensive line's big day that cleared the way for Colerain QB Greg Tabar to rush for 4 touchdowns (49 yards rushing on 11 carries) and chip in 81 yards passing (4 of 4 with 1 TD) as the offense racked up 500+ yards of offense for the second consecutive week.

The defense did an admirable job holding one of the areas most dynamic players to just 67 yards rushing (134 combined yards) and two rushing TD's. Spencer Ware is a special talent and to hold him to those numbers was a solid accomplishment. Still, the Colerain head coach was impressed. "There were times out there where we had him and then he did something that was like it was out of John Madden (the video game)...Great players are going to make great plays." Overall, the Cardinals held the Vikings to just 208 yards of total offense. This speaks to just how explosive the Vikes can be as they still managed 3 TD's on offense and registered an electrifying 95 yard kick off return on the games first play. Credit the offensive output and a commanding 34 minute to 14 minute time of possession spread with an assist to the defense. In order to chase and contain a player like Spencer Ware fresh legs are required and the offense help provide that lift. This was a true team win.

We at www.wearecolerain.com would like to thank the Princeton Athletic department for allowing us access to the field and press box so we could bring you the pictures, video, interview and analysis from Thursday night's game.

Player of the game:

While it is hard to turn down a young man for carrying the ball 37 times for 221 yards, I'd like to give the award to Jordan Ross. The young man has struggled this season and he rebounded nicely on Thursday by converting 5 of 6 extra point attempts and one touch back on kick offs. He looked much more confident and I want to acknowledge him for keeping his head up and, like the men of Colerain do, work to get better.

Scoring Summary:
Princeton-Brown 96 Yard Kick Return-Kick Wilson
Colerain-Carter 14 Yard Pass from Tabar-Kick Ross
Princeton-Ware 1 Yard TD Run-Kick Wilson
Colerain-Tabar 9 yard TD Run-Kick Ross
Colerain-Tabar 6 Yard TD Run-Kick Failed
Colerain-Tabar 1 Yard TD Run-2-pt Conversion Good (Tabar run)
Colerain-Williams 4 Yard TD Run-Kick Ross
Princeton-Duckworth 41 Yard TD Pass from Hoopgood-Kick Wilson
Colerain-Tabar 1 Yard TD Run-Kick Ross
Princeton-Ware 2 Yard TD Run-Kick Failed

The Cardinals controlled the time of possesion in this game by a margin of 34:16 to 13:44, and used that to their advantage by keeping Princeton star Spencer Ware off the field.

Cardinals break into national Top 25 polls

Well it took beating three teams that had been ranked in 1 national poll or another to slip in, but it has happen. Colerain debuted this week in a number of national polls, including No. 24 in the PrepNation poll, No. 10 in the USA Today poll and have maintained their No. 1 status in the Massey Ratings poll.

I know I speak for many when I say these national polls generally prove little, but it is always nice to be recognized with the best of the best, great job Cards!

Video Highlights from Highlands Game

Check out this video clip from last nights game. Mainly featuring Colerain's sophomore running backs!

Flash and Crash Steal the Show, But Defense Creates Turning Point

It felt a little bit like football weather last night at the Cage as Colerain rolled to a 33-18 victory over nationally ranked Highlands. Though Colerain pulled away early in the third quarter the game was very much in doubt with 1:31 left in the first half.

That is when the Colerain defense gave the sputtering offense, and the Cardinal faithful, a much needed lift. Facing a 4th and 1 from their own 31 yardline and leading by a mere point (7-6) the Cardinal defense lead by Colin Lozier and Tyon Dixon (8.5 and 7 tackles respectively) swarmed over Bluebird QB Tony Guidugli short of the first down. From there the rejuvenated Colerain offense needed just 1:11 to drive 70 yards capped by Trayon Durham's (Crash) 4yrd TD run.

In the 2nd half Tyler Williams (Flash) added TD runs of 26 and 20 yards and Durham closed out Colerain's scoring with a punishing 29 yard run.

Overall the Super Sophs combined for a ridiculous 424 yards rushing on 36 carries (11.78 per carry). When the comment was made to Tom Bolden after the game that his sophomore running backs really stepped up tonight the confident coach quickly, and proudly, proclaimed "you've got that right!"

The running backs were only a part of the story, though. The offensive line had not looked like a typical Colerain line: mean, intense and leading the way for 100 yard rushers. Senior offensive lineman Brandon White attributed a preceived lack of fire to early season jitters. "I think the lack of intensity was from guys being nervous and not wanting to mess up...500 yards rushing (team) is a major, major accomplishment"

But with Princeton and their QB phenom, Spencer Ware, looming with a short week of practice Coach Bolden was peeking ahead to the Vikings. "we've got to find away to keep Ware off the field. He's just a special, special talent."

Leading Rushers: Tyler Williams 240 yards on 15 carries, 2 TD's., Trayon Durham 184 yards on 21 carries, 2 TD's.

Total Yards: Colerain 535, Highlands 317

Leading Tacklers: Lozier, 8.5, Dixon, 7, Pasquale, 6.

Scoring Summary:

Colerain-Tabar 3 yd run. Ross, Kick
Highlands-Weinel 21 yd FG
Highlands-Weinel 34 yd FG
