Schedule Taking Shape?
WeAreColerain.com
Here is what our sources were able to confirm for WeAreColerain.com tonight as it pretains to Colerain's 2009 Schedule:
- St. Xavier is likely the week 1 opponent in the Skyline Showdown. X, Elder and Colerain are the only schools without named opponents for week 1 and if Colerain plays Elder in week 2 that makes the matchup easy to call.
- Colerain, Elder and ESPN are still talking about week 2. The game would be a Sunday Noon contest and broadcast live. If Colerain and Elder accept the terms, both would request duPont Manuel and Trinity to move their games respectively to Saturday the following week.
- One report on Yappi.com stating that Elder was asked to give Colerain 4,000 tickets to the game. That is not the case. Colerain did, however, request 2,500.
- Elder in week 2 is still not for certain. Dan Bolden did confirm that Colerain is also talking with Huber Heights Wayne as a potential long-term solution to week 2 in years to come.
- Everything should be finalized and cleared up in the next week to ten days.

Colerain-
Behind a balanced scoring effort, The Colerain Lady Cardinals defeated GMC rival Lakota East Saturday, 59-39, at Colerain on 'Senior Day'.
All 5 seniors contributed on the sheet in their final appearance at home and, in a show of recognition by coach, Christi Mack, were brought out of the game one at a time so each player received a standing ovation from the home crowd. Colerain was paced by 15 points from Katie Comello and 14 from Junior, Ashley Wanninger. Mandy Woods contributed a rebound in 4 minutes of action, Kelly Bolden put up 5 points and 3 rebounds, Kara Patterson added 7 points and 7 boards and Barbara Heinrich had 8 points and 4 rebounds to fill out the senior stats on this day.

A Sad Day in the Colerain Family
Early Saturday morning (2/14/09) Colerain lost its biggest fan. Norb “Mr. Colerain” Monning passed away at Good Samaritan Hospital. Everyone remembers Norb as he sat in his folding chair at every athletic contest and school performance home or away for over 30 years. Norb was a part of the Colerain family and will be dearly missed by players, coaches, parents, and staff both past and present. Norb became such a fixture at Colerain events that even our opponents became friends with him. We will dearly miss the gentle man with the wide grin and a folding lawn chair. Please take a few minutes to remember Norb and the joy he brought to all of us. Please check the newspaper for information on his arrangements. When we are notified I will send another email.
-Dan Bolden
The staff of WeAreColerain.com would like to pass its heart felt prayers and condolences to the Monning family.

Article from Enquirer regarding Colerain's next opponent: Mercy
From Coach Mack, regarding Mercy:
"Mercy is a scrappy team and they have good players that work extremely hard. I am expecting that we will be in a battle til the buzzer sounds. Our keys to the game are very simple. They have two girls that average over 10 rebounds a game. We have to keep them off of the boards. The other thing is that we must outwork them. Those are two things that we have the ability to control and we must do them to win.
They only play 5 or 6 kids so that could play to our advantage if we keep our kids fresh. I have a lot of respect for Mary Jo and her coaching staff and know that we must bring our A game to come out with a win."
Mercy is 9-7 with losses to GMC foes, Princeton and Sycamore.
Come out to Colerain and support the Lady Cardinals!
Week 2 update as of 6:00 AM 2/11/2009

Update regarding week 2-
The Enquirer reported yesterday that Colerain and Elder could, potentially, play each other in week 2 on ESPN. However, the network and Elder want the game at the Pit and that is not necessarily in the best interest of Colerain, who was under the knowledge that Elder would be its week 1 opponent in the Skyline event on a neutral field. AD Dan Bolden doesn't mind playing Elder but would prefer the game be at Nippert Stadium.
Via Email this morning, Bolden confirmed that there has not been a time table set forth for Colerain to commit to anything at this time and he is still exploring other options for a week 2 opponent.
WeAreColerain.com will keep our readers up to date on this developing situation as it unfolds. Thanks for reading and GO CARDS!!!

Herbstriet Cancelled?
Here is what I was able to confirm:
1) Colerain will not move from the Skyline Event in week 1. So, playing the Herbstriet in Columbus in week 1 is a definite 'Out' for Colerain. Colerain has been very loyal to the Skyline people over the years and will remain so.
2) It is possible that Colerain and Elder, if left out in the cold, could play in Week 2 this season if an opponent for Colerian can be found for Week 1 at the Skyline event. Nothing is set in stone for this to happen but Bolden did confirm that it was a possibility.
Stay tuned for updates!

Cardinals Stars Lead The Way To Much Needed Victory Against Princeton
WeAreColerain.com
Colerain High School-
Before the game Colerain senior guard, Katie Comello, was honored for scoring her 1,000th point in a loss to Lakota West on Saturday. The points moved Comello into fourth place on the all-time Lady Cardinal scoring list and just 26 points shy of third place in school history. After receiving a standing ovation and a commorative game ball, that she promptly delivered to her father in the stands, Comello did her best to claim third place all by herself on this night. Comello scored 21 points and junior gaurd Ashley Wanniger, Colerain's leading scorer this season, chipped in 17 to lead the Cardinals to a much needed victory over GMC rival Princeton on Monday night, 62-48.
"I am just so proud of Katie. She has really stepped up her game as of late and is really taking charge of our team on the floor. Her and Ashley shot the ball very well tonight. This was a much needed win and boost for our confidence...I think our kids were really down from our last two losses because we knew we didn't play our best against Sycamore and came up short" said Cardinal head coach, Christi Mack.
Princeton, playing without its star player and Ohio State recruit, Brianna Sanders (Torn ACL), jumped out to an early 8-1 lead midway through the 1st quarter. After a time out by Colerain, the Cardinals found their composure and began attacking the Vikings inside. Starting center, Barbara Heinrich, scored 4pts and added 4 rebounds but it was her physical pressence inside along with F/C Kelly Bolden (7pts/4RB's in 16 minutes) off the bench that opened up things on the outside. "Kelly Bolden came off the bench and gave us a huge lift on the inside which in return opened up shots for Katie and Ash on the outside" Colerain went on a remarkable 31-11 run to end the first half taking a 32-19 lead into the locker room.
But Princeton would not go down without a fight. Lead by Jerrhonda Stallworth's 20 points and Karen Nelson's 14 the Vikings had whittled an 18 point Colerain lead down to 8 with 10 seconds left in the 3rd quarter. Using a screen set by Heinrich, Comello burried a 3 point basket from the left of the key that pushed the lead back to 11. And when Wanniger connected on a deep 3 from the right wing to start the 4th, Colerain was back in control and hit its free throws down the stretch to cement the win. Colerain is now 9-4 in the GMC and 14-4 overall. The Cardinals host Mercy on Thursday night. Come out and support this fantastic basketball team as they gear up for the OHSAA Playoffs!

Colerain v. Sycamore!
I had a chance to catch up with Cardinal head coach, Christi Mack, and get her keys to the game and what to look for tonight against a tough Aviator squad.
"Keys to victory...
1. Handle their pressure
2. Defend the three point line
3. Rebound
Sycamore is an excellent three point shooting team and they play very hard. We are really two very similiar teams. We both play very hard and aggressive on the defensive end.
Ashley Wanninger leads our team in scoring around 18ppg and Katie Comello is around 12ppg. Katie is 25 pts away from hitting 1000pts in her career.
We have to have great effort on the defensive end and execute on the offensive end.
They have a freshman point guard who has great size and is very poised for her age. We must stop her in transition and find their three point shooters. Senior guard Abby Cooper is shooting 46% from behind the arc. They are well coached and disciplined so my guess is that this game will be won on the defensive end!"
This promises to be a very entertaining game. Come out and support the Lady Cards!
