FOLLOW-UP: Ashley Wanninger comments on Xavier commitment

(Photo courtesy of Michael Noyes Photography, exclusive for WeAreColerain.com)

In a follow-up to yesterday's announcement regarding Colerain star basketball player Ashley Wanninger's decision to orally commit to Xavier University, WeAreColerain.com tracked down the future Musketeer to get her thoughts on why Xavier University was the place for her.

In regards to Xavier as an institution, Wanninger said, “In general, XU is small but big in personality. The perfect fit for me.” Also, she stated that, “I am glad I play basketball because I will literally live in the Cintas center (locker room, weight room, gym, training room and more). It is a modern and beautiful (facility) in the eyes of any basketball player!” Overall, Wanninger stated that the Xavier campus “…has everything necessary to achieve a great education and still experience the college life.”

When asked about the Xavier Women’s team in general, Wanninger stated that, “the coaching staff is competitive and successful and a joy to be around,” and continued by commenting on the players themselves by adding, “the team is real! Girls that I look up to! They can act goofy but at the same time be professional.... just like myself, I am sure we will get along!!!”

Wanninger made a point to discuss the importance of academics at Xavier and how that played a large role in her choice. She spoke very highly of her Academic Advisor, Sister Fleming, calling her “fantastic” and the “most intelligent woman I have ever met.” Wanninger’s goals in the classroom are as lofty as they are on the court. As if adjusting to college and playing a DI sport was not enough, Wanninger shared with WeAreColerain.com the following in regards to her planned course of study: “The art studio was fantastic. The fact that they offer double majoring is great because that is what I would like to do... double major in graphic design and communications.”

Finally, Wanninger added, “Overall XU is where I want to be! I love it! I cannot say it enough. There are no negatives about it. But it is truly the people that helped me get here that deserve all the credit, my family, coaches, teachers, and friends.... They have witnessed me through the good and bad and I thank them for every minute they have spent with me. This has truly been a blessing.”

There is no doubt that Ashley will become an integral part the Xavier Women’s program and will continue to represent Colerain with the same class and maturity she does today.

WeAreColerain.com is proud, once again, to CONGRATULATE Ashley on her achievements and wish her the very best on all her future endeavors, beginning with her Senior season at Colerain next winter as she strives to become the all-time leading scorer in Colerain girls basketball history.

Good luck Ashley!

In an exclusive to WeAreColerain.com, Coach Mack said, "I am so happy for Ashley! She has certainly put in a ton of time in the gym and in the classroom and is very deserving of the opportunity to play basketball at Xavier University. Xavier is not only getting a great student and athlete, but they are getting an even better young lady. Ashley and her parents are first class people and I know first hand that Xavier will welcome them into the X family! I'm excited for the opportunity to coach her for another year and look forward to her having a great senior year!"

WeAreColerain.com has reached out to Ashley as well and will post her reaction and thoughts on her decision when they become available.

From everyone at WeAreColerain.com and on behalf of the entire Colerain community, CONGRATULATIONS to Ashley on this tremendous achievement and best of luck as you finish your career at Colerain and afterwards at Xavier University.
